Greetings to all,

This Friday January 8th at BevMo! Mira Loma we are back with Beer Tasting! As we begin a new year of tasting, I would like to thank everyone who has made beer tasting on Friday evening, a regular part of their Friday’s With this year, hopefully bigger and better tastings, more random innuendos in my emails, and along with the over usage of such grammatical markings; such as the comma, the semicolon, and the exclamation mark! So I know it has been a couple of weeks without a beer tasting, but it is good to be back, with a list of random beers I hope the most of you have never had before! The only theme is; random and obscure. So without gilding the lily, let us get down to the first tasting of the year two thousand and ten.

From the wonderful country of Brazil, Xingu; this black beer gives off the impression of a nice heavy stout when it pours, but the taste and feel is more like a Schwarzbier. This light tasting beer has a soft malty scent with a very faint aromatic touch. The hints of caramel are present from the malts with a bit of sweetness. Deceivingly mouth coating, I find this to be an enjoyable beer, more so from the Jedi mind tricks used from when first presented to the actual taste, it’s not what you would usually expect from a beer like this, light but still tasty.

From Dixie Brewing Co. The Blackened Voodoo Lager! This is another Black beer, from down in Louisiana. Also, a bit on the malty side, this dark beer pours rich and dark, but is surprisingly lighter for what you would think. The roasted malts again give off tones of caramel, paired with some sweet tones of dark fruit, and a bit of toffee that gives it a slight coffee like taste. Light on the carbonation, this beer is also easy going, and easy to drink.

Next on the list from Shmaltz Brewing, the He’Brew Genesis Ale, yes my friends, “The Chosen Beer”. This copper beer is lighter on the malts, and bigger on the hops. With decent bop bitterness to this Ale, this beer has also a few sweet citrus tones, to make it a little unique. Along with those citrusy..? tones, we can hop to find a decent amount of bready yeast, and mild malts to try and help balance out the beer. Should be easy clean relaxing beer to taste, and yes my friends, it’s Kosher.

Next up from Green Flash Brewing, the Hop Head Red! With a copper color, this beer has a great crisp fresh clean hop taste, almost piney. With a bit of malt up front, you can expect that classic caramel taste, with a strong hop back end to support it. Light on the carbonation, but heavy in flavor, this beer is a bit more complex than the previous beer and hops to be a great taste. With some sweet tones hidden in the mix of this beer, the nice red open to the hop finish makes this a decently balanced beer, though maybe a bit heavier on the hops… mmmmm hops…

Lastly on our tasting today, we will be visiting Belgium and tasting a dubbel dark abbey style, the Grimbergen Double Abbey Ale. This dark reddish ale with a decent head has several dark sweet tones inside, perhaps some dark cherries, that classic Belgium sugar taste. A little on the boozey taste side, but has a great caramel taste on the front end, with a syrup like texture this beer will coat the mouth, leaving a lasting taste. Not too overbearing on the sweetness, but still a slightly complex beer to enjoy. Not so bitter on the back end, but having that Canadian Unibroue feel to it, should be fun to taste!
